This was the beginning of my journey across the Atlantic. Amazing what boredom and a couple of beers will do for the imagination. I mean, what an opportunity!! I'm just sitting around having a few beers, getting my daily dose of Ernie, and just generally farking around, and low and behold ' I've got mail.' Well, needless to say, I was bowled over. So much so, that I almost didn't finish my beer and go get another one. This person needed my help. And hell, all that I have to give was an empty bank account number and my personal identification. That was easy enough. So I thought I'd write this chap back and tell him that I was willing and able to embark on such a worthwhile endeavor. 9.2 million dollars!!!!! My payday finally came in. I just received your e-mail in response to my worries over your prolonged silence some while ago. I am presently out of my duty station. I am at the Brass Export Terminal in Bonny, Bonny kingdom, Rivers State on an official assignment. I have been very busy and just saw your mail. I understood from your mail that you want to come down to Nigeria on thursday the 18th of July. I am writing you to let you know that there is really NO reason for you to come down to Nigeria now. This is so because if you come now, there is nothing to be done because we have not registered your research centre. There is nothing to be done and no papers to sign now. That is why I have been telling you all this while to type out the application letter and send to me ASAP so that I can get your centre registered with the appopriate authorities. I want you to settle down your mind to understand and follow the simple procedure I have outlined in my mails sent to you. I want you to channel your mind and efforts towards sticking to the procedure which is simple, normal (as obtainable here) and the only way out.
There is NO NEED for you to come to Nigeria now. The unnecessary expenditure of coming to Nigeria now is uncalled for. We have to start right where we have to by first registerring your research centre. Afterwards, anything can come up. I really appreciate your good gesture towards me. Please do not bother yourself to come to Nigeria now. There is absolutely no need for that. Stay back in Florida and do as I say. In fact if you come, we will not see because I am on duty even right now at the facility but I have to round it up quick so that we can commence this transaction. Thank you for your concern. All is well here. We decided to take a short 'honeymoon' type break for a couple of days after our counseling sessions. I will return on Sunday. My wife is very excited to hear your voice also. She is very happy for us.

I understand your position and your wife's feelings as regards "no business untill after all is settled". I understand well but we have to start communicating now. In any case, the registration of your centre is still on and is expected to be rounded up by tomorrow. I have done all the paper work as regards the acceptance and registration of your center with my committee which I head as the chairman. That was like playing on home grounds. Hence, I have submitted all the necessary documents to the LNG/NNPC for onward consideration for registration. We are right on track my friend and we are definitely making progress. All is working according to plans and in no time from now, we should be talking about how to meet and disburse the funds.

I too grow frustrated at my many attempts to call you. I call many times a day from my neighbors facility and all that I get are buzzing and clicking sounds. No matter what time of the day I call it is the same thing. With all the freaking Oil you have over there, you'd think you'd spare a few bucks for a decent telecommunications system ...and some decent schools to help the spelling along.
I must admit ..... it was not a matter of our phone being disconnected. A trunk line was cut by tornados, in Fort Pierce, near our facility and communications have been down. I was not aware of the tornadic activity in my area until we returned home. THat's one beating I didn't have to give the spouse. I am lucky to have wireless internet service....so that I may communicate with you. I am in the process of getting a new Corporate cell phone package, for all the staff, so that you may reach me easier. I decided to upgrade everyones package to facilitate billing.
So what is it that you cannot relay to me through email regarding this transaction? It appears to me that you could have outline the entire procedure to me in print, rather than get upset. I think it would be best to have the written material in front of me to review...then when we speak......we may rehearse. If you want me to know the 'routine' then you have me studying the materials everyday until I am contacted by the DRC. At this point, I have to question whether you want me to succeed or not. Send me the materials and I will study them relentlessly and rehearse it with you as often as you like, on the phone. Please don not make the mistake of trying to brief me on the phone the night before I speak to the DRC .... I was an actor once and I need to review a script before we rehearse.
You are right, this is the opportunity of a life time. Provide me with the appropriate materials and I will give a preformance like you've never seen. Preformances like mine shall not be rivaled by even such greats as Mutiny on the Bounty, a Streetcar named Desire, or even On the Waterfront.

I was only worried and my worries are not baseless. I strongly feel that verbal conversation between us on the phone will be better and more importantly, I want to hear your voice and hear it all the time too. I am sorry for the breakdown in your communications systems as caused by the tornados. I think the idea of getting a corporate cell phone package is a very good one. Please let me know when this will be done and how long it will last. I will appreciate an early response with detailed information.

Tornados still have the lines down here. Gotta love Florida in the Summer. I will ask my neighbor if we could fax the documents to his hardware store. Don't be alarmed if you do not recognize the number as mine. I just want to make sure we have a backup plan in case communications do not get restored here in a timely manner. In the meantime, I will keep trying my line until it is resolved and advise you either way. As a matter of fact, I will give you both numbers so we can make certain our destiny. I will fax any outstanding materials to you attention tomorrow also.
I agree that communication if of utmost importance in dealings such as these. The Emergency departments tell me that all communications should be restored by the weekend. We will see, public utility companies are not known for their 'quick' service here in the United States. I thank God my satellite communications network was not harmed, otherwise, we might not be conversing. The internet is my only means of communications.
